I have been at the University of Maryland, College Park in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science since 2007 as a research scientist. Since 2013, I've had the distinct pleasure of directing our new undergraduate program.

I graduated top (and bottom!) of my class in physics and received my bachelor of arts in 1994

I received my masters in Physics in 2000 and my PhD in 2002. My advisor was Ken Minschwaner. The title of my dissertation was The Photochemistry of Hydroxyl in the Middle Atmosphere: An Analysis of Measurements and Model Simulations

  • Director of the Undergraduate and Professional MS programs in AOSC, solely responsible for recruiting and academic advising of all AOSC undergraduates, oversee AOSC undergraduate research program which connects AOSC students with researchers from NASA and NOAA

  • Helped design undergraduate program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at UMD, created 2012
  • Oversee undergraduate senior research program in AOSC (a full year senior research project is required for all AOSC majors). This has led to 5 peer reviewed publication and numerous presentations at professional conferences
  • Created the Maryland Earth Science Applications (MESA) Initiative. Phase I is a formal MOU between UMD/AOSC and NOAA NCEP to support student research programs (currently under review by NOAA and UMD legal teams)
  • Academic advisor for all AOSC undergraduates and professional MS students (~75 students)
  • Teach AOSC200 “Weather and Climate” enrollment of 240 students each semester. This is the second largest I-series general education class at UMD. Student evaluations available on request
  • Oversee 4-6 teaching assistants who cover 8 discussion sections of AOSC200 and 8 sections of AOSC201
  • Created 4+1 BS/MS degree track in AOSC
  • Research Activites and Experience

  • Air quality modeler for the state of Maryland working closely with the Maryland Dept. of the Environment, the Ozone Transport Commission, and the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management, to help agencies develop strategies for attaining EPA air quality standards (2010-present)
  • Using data from orbital (TROPOMI, OMI, MISR) and sub-orbital (DISCOVER-AQ, OWLETS) missions, UMD research aircraft, and EPA ground monitoring stations to improve understandingthe fidelity of climate and regulatory air quality models, such as CMAQ and CAMx
  • Created an energy balance climate model to better understand modern climate data records and to improve the predictive capability
  • Investigating the emissions and transport of very short-lived halocarbons to better quantify polar stratospheric ozone loss and improve interpretation of satellite column observations of halogen oxides
  • Contributed to the Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion reports (2006, 2010) and the SPARC Report on the Evaluation of Chemistry-Climate Models (2010)
  • Analyzed the air quality benefits associated with the Maryland Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act (2009), which led to the 2015 update to the GGRA
  • Have served on nine PhD committees since 2015. Was the primary advisor for Dr. Allison Ring (2018)
  • Published 42 peer reviewed journal articles, contributed to numerous white papers
  • Given numerous presentations at scientific conferences and public venues
