State of the Art Short-Term Climate Forecasting: Current Status, Prospects for Improvement, and Remaining Challenges

David Dewitt
Climate Prediction Center, NOAA/NWS/National Centers for Environmental Prediction

The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) produces short-term climate forecasts for leads from week two to seasonal. This talk will describe the state of the science for these forecasts.  Limiting factors in producing more skillful forecasts will be discussed.  Finally, a short discussion will be held on new sources of potential predictive skill that we hope to tap in the future.
