The Thundery Summer of 2016: A Review of Severe Weather Events in the D.C. Region, Including the Ellicott City Flash Flood

Jeffrey Halverson
Geography and Environmental Systems, UMBC, MD

As Severe Storms Expert for the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang, the author keeps his finger on the daily pulse of convective storms impacting the D.C.-Baltimore region. In this presentation, I review a season's worth of noteworthy thunderstorm events from May-September, 2016. Highlighted are specific, challenging cases including several supercell/giant hail days; Columbia, MD tornado; a couple of troubling "fizzles" and the mesometeorology of an event that grabbed national headlines: The highly destructive Ellicott City flash flood.
