Hurricane force winds extend up to 125 miles and tropical storm force winds extend up to 290 miles from the center of this powerful storm. At about 07:00 UT (03:00 EDT) on 16 September, Floyd was crossing the coast of North Carolina near Cape Fear and had maximum sustained winds of 110 mph.
