This past fall, multiple AOSC graduate students led a crowdfunding campaign through the university’s Launch UMD platform to purchase a low-cost radiosonde system for the department. These reusable sondes record temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction through GPS coordinates, and are reusable if recovered.
Our goal was to raise $7500 for sondes, balloons, helium, and the hardware and software to log the data.
During a 30-day campaign, we raised over $10,000 from nearly 100 donors, allowing us to buy enough materials to last for a couple of years worth of intermittent launches.
With this system, we can launch for educational outreach, for classroom demonstrations, and for special weather events in our area.
The equipment has arrived and we hope to have our first official launch soon!
