By about 5.3 million years ago, the Mediterreanean had refilled. This marked the end of the Miocene Epoch and the beginning of the Pliocene. Today, the Mediterranean Sea has an area of 2.5 million square kilometers, which is almost equal to the size of Argentina. Currently, it is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Strait of Gibraltar, which is only 14 kilometers (9 miles) wide.
